International exhibition of author’s dolls

Exhibition history

The history of MuñecArt begins in the year 2016. Before its appearance, the Spanish people at the words “author’s doll” believed that it was Matryoshka or porcelain figurines. Nobody knew what it was – an art doll. Therefore, the main goal of the project was to popularize the art of dolls in Spain. We are constantly working on this, improving and modifying the project, depending on the wishes of visitors and participants, from year to year.

Now in the fifth season, we have expanded the boundaries to the world.

Yes, we are quite ambitious!

MuñecArt - the annual international exhibition of the author's doll

Founder of the exhibition

Irina Abrasokina

Alicante, Spain

This story began about 10 years ago.

Nothing foretold then what an accidental meeting would lead to. Nevertheless, someone up there apparently needed to show the way.

I lived in a beautiful City, went to work every day, traveled periodically … In general, I lived like everyone else. Nothing remarkable. Until one day I ran into this …

I walked along the little-visited line of Gostiny Dvor. There are always much fewer people here than on Sadovaya, and no one bothered to look at the goods. Suddenly, right after the carpet store, something strange opened up to me. Quite a large store with goods of unknown purpose. There were also a few dolls that looked very different from the ones I got used to since childhood.
Like any creative person who catches something interesting literally out of thin air, I sensed that I had found a treasure.
There were so many things! Various types of plastics, tools, books, magazines, doll eyes, hair and much more.
Until that moment, I had never encountered the world of designer dolls and had no idea of its existence, so that meeting was literally like a bolt from the blue.
I realized that this is exactly what I have always been looking for. My creative nature was always looking for a way out, but everything that I found did not fascinate for a long time, it was not right. And only dolls helped me to understand that I can create absolutely any images and feel with my hands what I am doing. As it turned out, it is very important to me.

Stunned by this discovery, I disgracefully fled the store.

A few days later I returned there to check the sensations. I walked around for a long time. It was not clear how to approach this.
Obviously, this should be done from childhood. I began to get mortally jealous of the doll artists. There was a feeling that I was cheated with something serious in life.
On another visit, I found an advertisement with puppet courses. Clutching at the find, I decided to enroll my daughter on the course and sit next to her and absorb. Lisa’s wishes were not taken into account. She only needed to attend the course until the mad mother realizes her ambitions.

I called. They explained to me on the phone that this is a course for adults. My world turned upside down again and finally got to its feet.

Ira, losing her slippers on the go, ran to study. And from that moment on, my life took a different path, gradually changing everything around.
I found the business of my life.
Soon I met my future husband and moved to Spain.
Living in Spain, I discovered a complete lack of doll exhibitions, to which I had time to get used to. For some time I suffered (about three weeks), and then I decided to create an exhibition myself. If the mountain does not go to Mohammed, Mohammed will go to the mountain.

This is how MuñecArt was born. I love to talk about it. Never get bored. I wanted to come up with something exceptional, individual, unlike anything else. Analyzing the past four years, I see that no season is alike. The exhibition is a living organism, it is constantly growing and changing, responding to the requests of visitors and participants.

Our Vision

Modern author’s doll is a special type of art that combines sculpture and painting, costumes and theater, poetry and music.

We create our exhibition as an accessible means for popularizing doll art. It is by this that we have created a unique platform where art connoisseurs and collectors can see the masters and get acquainted with their works.

Our Mission

Popularize and scale the art of the author’s doll.

Give an opportunity for the start to young masters and provide an opportunity for masters with regalia to show their work and awards.

Make the exhibition of the author’s doll a wide-scale and cultural event.

The first season was held in three Spanish cities at once; in June - Alicante, in July - Benidorm, in August - Oriuela Costa. The exhibition was held in the halls of the casino. Several masters came to the opening of the exhibition in person, but most sent their works by mail. In a sense, MuñecArt became a cultural revolution in Spain. The Spanish people were completely unfamiliar with this type of art and welcomed the newcomer with delight. It became clear that it was necessary to continue what had begun. However, despite the success, holding it in such a long format turned out to be very difficult, besides, dolls could suffer from constant moves and I decided to do it only in Alicante, limiting myself to a few days.

The second season of MuñecArt took place from June 4 to 7, 2017 in Alicante. This time, many more masters came in person, but the percentage of correspondence participants was still large. As part of the exhibition, a conference was also held with the participation of such stars as Ankie Daanen and Brigitte Deval.

In the same year, for the first time, we held a charity lottery in favor of the children's hospice "House with a Lighthouse." The tradition of raising money for charity has survived to this day, and masters always willingly take part in it.

The third exhibition was held in the luxurious imperial hall of the XIX century, casino Alicante. It was decided to radically change the entourage and therefore this salon was chosen as the most beautiful in the city. It is to this hall that we owe amazing photographs, as well as close attention to the press. At the same time, the exhibition was decorated with the puppet performance "Signora Sausage" performed by puppet theater actress Olga Skidanova. The performance was composed in an old casino library and gathered a huge number of young spectators. Then we held master classes of Christina Vassa and Irina Zheleznova and lessons were held directly in the hall during the exhibition. And, of course, a charity lottery. This time in favor of the Union of Volunteers "Sobachka kak sobachka".  As you can see, every year was rich in events.

MuñecArt IV

The fourth year of MuñecArt is limited to only two days, but so emotionally charged that the participants did not want to diverge even after closing. Of course, there were amazing master classes from Lucy Lutikova and Cristina Wassa. By the way, Christina gives her lessons, only, on the MuñecArt, nowhere else. If someone wants to study with this famous author, then he needs to go to Alicante. In addition, the first Gaudir doll competition was held in the same year. Thus, over 4 years, the project was formed as a brilliant and desirable festival of art dolls, at which masters not only show their work to a new public, but also study, as well as relax and communicate, under the Spanish sun on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

MuñecArt V

The fifth season, due to well-known circumstances, is completely different. It's virtual. This does not mean that he is worse, by no means. It's just different. The authors have all the same opportunities as at the "live" exhibition; show work, the opportunity to sell, communicate with colleagues and learn something new, only all this is not in the format of one city, but for the whole world. Exciting prospect!

Whether MuñecArt will return to the previous format or not, time will tell. Today he is such and he is beautiful!
